Our story, Preesall, Lancashire

    Handmade in Preesall

Tallow soap from a bench in Lancashire. This is how a bar gets from the first recipe to the stall.

    Years of testing

The recipes take years. A batch is made, used, and made again, until it is worth keeping.

A bar uses four ingredients. Grass fed tallow, olive oil, coconut oil and castor oil. The tallow is organic and grass fed, and rich in vitamins A, D, E and K.

    Off to the lab

When a recipe is ready, it goes to a registered lab for testing. Soaposh then carries out the cosmetics safety assessments.

That is the proper check before a soap is sold. The years of trying things at the bench come first. The lab comes after.

    Clay, stout and flowers

The colour comes from clay. Kaolin for the cream bars, green clay, French pink, and purple for a deeper shade. On the patio, beside the sweet peas, the rounds dry in rows.

The beer soap uses Moroccan red clay and a local stout. The colour takes four attempts to come right. Dried flowers from 2020 go on the wax melts, which are beeswax, tallow, and oils for the scent.

    Left on the rack

Cold process soap has to wait. The beer soap cures for about six weeks on the wooden rack, until it is harder, milder, and longer lasting.

The balms stay simple: tallow, squalane, shea and vitamin E. The lip balm is for dry lips. The solid dish soap will be sold when it is finished.

    Method

    How a bar is made

Cold process, then a long wait on the rack.

    1

    Warm the fats

Grass fed tallow with olive, coconut and castor. Measured, melted, and watched with a thermometer.

    2

    Blend and colour

Lye meets the oils. Clays and essential oils follow. The batter is poured into silicone and swirled by hand.

    3

    Unmould

Bars leave the mould when they hold their shape. Trees pressed into the top, rounds, and squares for the markets.

    4

    Cure

Weeks on the wooden rack, until the bar is harder, milder, and longer lasting.

Soap Bar Shop stall at South Planks Farm

    Out in the world

From patio table to market stall

South Planks Farm, near Garstang, is the first market stall. Wooden crates, handwritten tags, lavender bundles, and a green tree seal that says handmade and all natural.

Next for Christmas gifts and stocking fillers: Scorton Christmas Food and Gift Fair, Sunday 1 November, 10am to 3.30pm at Scorton Village Hall.

People write in like neighbours. Messages from the stall are answered properly, and there are samples if you want to try a bar first.

    What people say

“A little bit of luxury every time, made with care.”

    Jaki Mooney

“The white lavender tallow bar has helped with my psoriasis.”

    Good to know

    Supports the skin barrier

The fats in tallow can help nourish and support the skin’s protective barrier, so skin can feel softer and more comfortable.

    Helps lock in moisture

Especially in balms, tallow forms a protective layer that can help reduce moisture loss on dry, rough or chapped skin.

    A long cure

Cold process, then weeks on the rack. A bar is sold when that cure is finished.

A little reminder: tallow is not a miracle ingredient. Natural skincare is not right for everyone. Very sensitive or eczema prone skin may be better with a gentle, fragrance free bar.
